Our mission and ministry

Northwest Church seeks to define and shape itself as a church in response to Christ’s affirmation that the greatest commandments are that we love God and neighbour. We recognise that to commit to Christ is to engage the congregation in a process of sometimes radical and painful change. In what we believe is a redeemed world, we are a faith community which exists to serve.

We believe that we worship God through entering into meaningful relationships with the community around us. Through these relationships, we look for patterns of ministry and outreach which are appropriate to the unique and sometimes complex needs of our parish.

We recognise the significance of Christ’s washing of his disciples’ feet and his affirmation of the value of those the world regards as last and least. In Christ we are committed to offering a welcome and a spiritual home to everyone.

Activities

Our premises are in use seven days a week. We lie at the heart of the community we serve.

Regular activities in and around the church include Youth Club, a daily Play Group, indoor curling (mainly for the senior members of the community), Rainbows, Brownies, Beavers, Cubs, Boys’ Brigade (all sections), Baton Twirlers (majorettes), the Guild, the Work Group (makes and provides clothing for a project in Malawi), special acts of worship for the bereaved, informal communion (weekly) for those who prefer an alternative to the formality of church on Sunday, quiet times for prayer and reflection (weekly), services in residential homes in the Parish, monthly coffee mornings run by the organisations which use the church, Dumfries Male Voice Choir (weekly rehearsals on the premises), Community Council meetings (on the premises), contacts with Kaleidoscope and Shelter, Holywood, Lincluden, Lochside, St. Ninian’s schools – three weekly assemblies, services, and informal visits.

History

Dumfries Northwest is a new congregation. It was formed in September 2007 out of the union between the former Holywood and Lincluden churches and Lochside Parish Church. The courageous, costly and radical change which such a union requires is precisely that – courageous, costly and radical.

Dumfries Northwest is an exciting church in which to worship and serve. We are changing all of the time as we seek to understand what the Kingdom of God means in this part of Dumfries. The Minister’s Chaplaincy at HMP Dumfries and his very active chaplaincies in the local schools extends our ministry beyond “church” and into the wider local community and our extensive congregational involvement in the parish is bringing community and the church together.

We have a very short history and feel that our “story” lies very much in the present and the future.

  • WHY CHURCHES TOGETHER?

    • Greater oneness between churches, fellowships and organisations as Jesus prayed, ’that they all may be one’ (John 17.21).

    • A growth of understanding and common life between churches, fellowships and organisations.

    • Unified action in proclaiming and responding to the gospel in the whole of life.

Daily Prayer

Prayer is a rewarding and life enhancing conversation with God. But at times it can be difficult. You can feel isolated from others, running out of things to say and getting distracted. Jesus encouraged his followers to pray regularly and discipline is needed to accomplish that. Daily prayers help by developing a habit.
